After her famous ascent of Mount Rainier in 1890 Fay Fuller began using a long handled ice axe for climbing instead of an alpenstock. This 49 inch length axe was probably imported from Europe. It could be handled in much the same way as current ice axes or used in the place of the much longer alpenstock.
