On this clear morning two Mountaineers decided to make the difficult climb of the Cowlitz Chimneys.

Dr. Philip Rogers and others were ready for an early climb toward Little Tahoma. The climbing party kept their bearings by noting the changes in visual appearance of nearby peaks. Mount Rainier and Little Tahoma were photographed as the climb progressed. From the ridge leading to Whitman Crest, the party could look down on the Cowlitz Glacier.

Each foot of elevation gain brought more of Mount Rainier into view for the party. From upper Cowlitz Park a clear panorama of the entire eastern side of the mountain was photographed.

The party continued toward Little Tahoma by skirting the lower portion of the Whitman Glacier. They then climbed Whitman Crest to elevation 9,364' near the base of Little Tahoma. The return trip was made on the same route.

Just below the Mountaineers’ Indian Bar camp, a party followed the Ohanapecosh River a short distance to Wauhaukaupaukin Falls. Looking down from the top of the falls, the canyon was seen below. A single log bridge over the top of the falls made a dangerous crossing to the other side.

Photos of the cascading falls were taken as part of the group climbed down into the canyon. Viewers stood as close to the bottom of the falls as they could get.
